It was the late 1980’s when a promising young musician from Scarborough—presumably in between visits “to the late-night record shop”— dropped into a Harvey’s following a Peter Gabriel concert and found himself in the general vicinity of a classmate he didn’t really like. A mutual affinity for Gabriel quickly dissolved any animosity and a friendship was formed, one that would spawn one of Canada’s greatest bands. 15 million albums sold later and the former foes, Steven Page and Ed Robertson, co-founders of the Barenaked Ladies had amassed one hell of a career that includes multiple JUNO Awards, SOCAN Awards, Genie Awards, Billboard Music Awards, two Grammy Award nominations and an induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2018. Not to mention countless anthems that are synonymous with Canadiana such as “Brian Wilson”, “If I Had a Million Dollars”, “Pinch Me” and so many more.

After leaving the band in 2009, Page embarked on a solo career that has seen him produce six studio albums including 2010’s Page One which included singles “Indecision” and “Over Joy”, material he would showcase on his tour that included a string of shows with the Goo Goo Dolls.  He followed that with a New Year’s Day performance of the Canadian National Anthem at the 2011 NHL Winter Classic. In early 2021 he released the track “A Different Sort of Solitude” as part of the soundtrack for Canadian comedy film French Immersion, which was nominated for a Genie Award.

While working on a musical he wrote with playwright Daniel MacIvor for the Stratford Festival called Here’s What It Takes, the Covid-19 pandemic halted production. But that did not deter Page who decided to play concerts through Zoom, sometimes selling 1000 tickets at a time. The act cultivated a tightly-knit community of fans during a difficult time and provided catharsis for not only his ardent followers but Page himself.

In the summer of 2016, Page teamed up with fellow Canadian stalwarts Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness), Chris Murphy (Sloan), and Craig Northey (The Odds) to perform as the supergroup Trans-Canada Highwaymen. The band’s tour included covers of songs from the member’s respective bands for the first seven years of their existence.
