Peterborough Musicfest Receives SOCAN’s Prestigious “Licensed To Play” Award

News
October 1, 2025

Peterborough Musicfest is thrilled to announce that we have been honoured with SOCAN’s Licensed To Play Award at the 35th SOCAN Awards Gala in Toronto, part of SOCAN’s 100th anniversary celebrations.

The License To Play Award recognizes Canadian businesses and organizations that consistently demonstrate legal and ethical use of music by securing proper licences for public performances, ensuring that songwriters, composers, and publishers are fairly compensated for their work. Receiving this award is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to supporting Canadian music creators while bringing live, world-class music to our community.

We were especially honoured that the award was presented to us by Aysanabee, who performed at Musicfest in 2023 and continues to inspire audiences with his music and advocacy. Sharing the evening with so many remarkable artists made the occasion even more memorable — including Jason McCoy, Scott Helman, The Reklaws, Emily Reid, Preston Pablo, High Valley, Tyler Shaw, and The Strumbellas, all of whom have performed on the Musicfest stage in past years.

“On behalf of everyone at Peterborough Musicfest, we are deeply honoured to accept this award,” said Tracey Randall, Executive Director of Peterborough Musicfest. “To be recognized by SOCAN during its centennial year, and in the same evening as Canadian icons like Joni Mitchell, Drake, and Boi-1da, is truly special. This award is a tribute to our founder Fred Anderson’s vision, our volunteers, staff, sponsors, funders, and above all, our community. Together, we have sustained what is now Canada’s Longest Running Free Admission Music Festival, operating as a not-for-profit dedicated to bringing world-class music to our region, barrier-free.”

Founded in 1987, Peterborough Musicfest has welcomed over 700 artists and attracted more than 100,000 attendees each summer to Del Crary Park. The festival has become a cornerstone of summer in Peterborough and the Kawarthas, connecting people of all ages through the joy of live music.

Receiving SOCAN’s Licensed To Play Award during its centennial year is a tremendous honour for the entire Musicfest family. It reaffirms the importance of supporting Canadian music creators and celebrates the unique role Musicfest plays in making live music accessible to everyone.

We can’t wait to continue bringing unforgettable performances to our community — and to see you all at Del Crary Park this summer!
