Sultans of String
July 6 @ 8:00 pm
Peterborough Musicfest is proud to present three-time Juno Award nominated world music band Sultans of String on Saturday, July 6 at 8 p.m. – one of 16 performances presented this summer as part of the concert series’ 33rd season.
Described as “an energetic and exciting band with talent to burn” by Maverick Magazine in the UK, Sultans of String’s acoustic strings meet electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound, offering up a genre-hopping passport of Celtic reels, Flamenco, Gypsy jazz, Arabic, Cuban and South Asian rhythms.
Since coming together in 2007 to record its debut album Luna, Sultans of String’s music has attained multiple Top 10 positions on charts around the globe.
Along with three Juno Award nominations, Sultans of String has taken home a trio of Canadian Folk Music Awards while band leader Chris McKhool was honoured in 2013 with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his support of community and music education programs for at-risk youth.
Together with co-founder Kevin Laliberté (Flamenco guitar), McKhool (violin) has created a unique sound that has led to numerous tours across North America and the UK, including a 2016 tour that brought the band to Del Crary Park in 2016. In addition, Sultans of String has recorded six albums, the most recent Christmas Caravan in 2017.
Joining McKhool and Laliberté onstage are Eddie Paton (Flamenco guitar), Drew Birston (bass) and Chendy Leon (percussion), each of whom as has played with a number of musical giants such as Chantal Kreviazuk and Jesse Cook.
